Limerick city center Christmas lights will be switched on in a ceremony tomorrow, Friday.
Limerick boxer Andy Lee will join Mayor Kevin Kiely to switch on the city’s “eco friendly Christmas lights” and Ireland’s tallest Christmas tree at the event on Thomas Street. The Boherbuoy Band will also be in attendance playing.
Mayor Kevin Kiely says this year’s lights in the city and upon the 100ft floating Christmas tree are more environmentally friendly then ever before.
“All the main features of the city’s beautiful Christmas decorations are powered by low energy, low voltage bulbs which represents a huge energy saving. This means there will be a 75% saving on the running costs on the city’s bridges alone where there are almost 4000 LED bulbs. Our recycled Christmas tree will be even taller this year at 100 feet, without doubt the tallest Christmas tree in Ireland.”
The tree, which will float on the river Shannon is made from salvaged steel from major local building projects, including the re-development of Thomond Park and the Shannon Tunnel.
The ceremony gets underway outside Brown Thomas at 6pm and the event is part of the Winterfest Weekend. City traders hope to entice shoppers to spend in the city this Christmas season and numerous markets will take place across the city this weekend with Limerick City Council offering free on-street parking on the Saturday.
