Emergency services were working around the clock in Shannon Banks Monday night as flood waters from the Shannon began reaching homes.
Civil defence, Army, Garda and Fire personnel along with locals were trying to sandbag vulnerable houses in the Hampstead Park estate as some residents were evacuated form their houses in the area. In excess of 4,000 sandbags have been distributed to the affected areas in advance of the high tide.
The Local Authority has been warning of further flooding along the lower River Shannon owing to increasing levels of water in the Shannon system.
“Unprecedented rainfall levels and resultant record flooding along the River Shannon necessitated an increase in the amount of water that had to be released at Parteen Weir by the ESB”, the councils said in a statement Monday evening.

Meanwhile Limerick County Council is advising customers from Montpelier downstream to Limerick City to familiarise themselves with a number of actions, as outlined on www.flooding.ie.
