Emergency flood defences being constructed in Corbally as the area enters its 5th Day of Flooding

At least 14 families have been evacuated from the flood affected areas of Castleconnell, Montpelier and Mountshannon Road and officials are warning that up to a dozen more families will be evacuated later Thursday evening as the region enters its 5th day of flood warnings.

In Corbally water levels at Shannon Banks have reportedly risen by 4cm since 8.40am and a severe flood risk warning remains in place for Westbury, Shannon Banks, Clonlara and O’Briensbridge. Sandbags have also been deployed to houses at Lucas Drive.

The ESB had confirmed earlier Thursday morning that it would be again increasing the discharge of water from Parteen weir incrementally over the morning by up to 8% on the existing flow.

It has also emerged that the Office of Public Works has begun constructing a major flood defence from Athlunkard Bridge to Hampstead Park, Shannon Banks in a desperate bid to stave off flood waters. A Council spokesperson says a number of agencies are assisting the OPW in the feat.

Although there have been no new evacuations in Shannon Banks or the South East Clare area today, officials say the situation is under review at all times.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has said it is available to assist those who have been affected by the flooding. The SVP in Limerick are available on 061 317327 (office hours) or 087 985 68 96 anytime.
