Traffic Plan
New road to link Cathedral place to Sexton Street

Limerick City Council is introducing phase one of a new ‘Inner orbital route’ city traffic management plan this morning.

This first phase of the new city roads project which is costing nearly two million euro, comes into place at 10.30am.

The biggest change will see all inbound traffic on Mulgrave Street and Ballysimon Road on route to the City Centre be directed left at Cathedral Place onto Sexton Street to Roches Street, Parnell Street and to Wickham Street.

All traffic on Cathedral Place on route to the City Centre and Roxboro Road will be directed onto Sexton Street, Parnell Street and Wickham Street while all traffic on Roxboro Road on route to the City Centre will be directed onto Sexton Street, to Parnell Street, Roches Street and Wickham Street.

Upper William Street from the junction at Upper Gerald Griffin Street to its junction with Cathedral Place will now be one way out of town.

How exactly did it cost two MILLION euro to change the direction of traffic on an existing street network? Value for money my arse. Someone needs to supply a break down of every penny squandered on this.

  2. Mr Daydream says:

Well I’m guessing, very very basic breakdown =

    - CPO + compensation/relocation?
    - Demolition + removal of building services
    - Excavation of existing Roads and pavements
    - New services inc sewer
    - New road & new pavements (foundation bedding and surface materials)
    - Consultation
    - Professional fees
    - Contractors fees (inc plant).

They probably had to get separate contractors or subcontract for the demolition, but I don’t know.

Don’t know how much they all cost but when you break down the amount of work they had to do then 2million doesn’t sound steep. What’s the source for the 2 million anyway, and how much of the works did that cover?

  3. hgd says:

they made a bollox of it, I was on it saturdasy and they have turned a street that rain fairly smoothly into a right bottleneck, who ever approved that system should be sacked

  4. ginger nuts says:

As somebody whos involved in traffic daily i think this new system is a massive improvement.

  5. just me says:

its a total disgrace buses & trucks going down sexton street to get to roches street & parnell st passing the presentation school its only a matter of time b4 a child is killed i use this road 3times a day 2 collect kids from school & no parking areas to collect children & ur every so smart traffic warden was there friday from 8.30am to 4pm oh how 2 make money it will pay for itself with all the parking fines.

  6. Overtaxed road user says:

this is just such a horror…. i use this route every day, and it has been a nightmare since it started with traffic out to the ballysimon road on a Monday evening, wait until Thursday or Friday evening when it is really busy the traffic will be out to Tipperary… What fool signed this off??? He/she should be sacked they obviously don’t drive in Limerick what else can I say… Go back to the way it was to save further embaressment to the City Council….

  7. Mr Daydream says:

    It needs to happen.

Get over it or get the bus.
This is a city not a town.

    • hgd says:

yeah a city with 1 big bloody bottleneck that was introduced by the city Council, a major fu*up

mr daydream that is exactly what you are doing daydreaming..it does not matter if you are on the bus or in a car, motorbike you are still stuck in trafffic & before you reply dont say leave earlier as its like this from 7.30 in the morning & thoughout the day its a nightmare. come down roxboro rd & then some1 trys to turn into the jail boreen it just does not work tailback up to kennedy park church if you do go down the boreen u cant get out onto mulgrave street.total lack of planning again by our council & just to round this off not 1 but 2 traffic wardens working the same patch again today surly this is not council policy as there is no1 manning the other streets & every1 is double parking & taking up disabled parking spaces…. thats he

  9. Mr Daydream says:

Its part of a larger plan, it has to happen and it will happen.

This is one stage of the ‘orbital route’ complete. It can’t all happen overnight.

Sure once the bus lane system is finished and a Park and Ride system set up on the major roads, you will be able to catch the bus conveniently and quickly.
Boggers who want to park right outside the shop/work will be a dying breed in a few years.

Don’t know anything about the traffic wardens, but I’m sure they are doing their jobs for a good reason, they are not a money making exercise as some idiots would tell you.
They are probably up there to try and keep idiots from parking on the double yellow lines on the new traffic system, as I have found many times driving that area since it opened.

A lot of the congestion in the city is caused by idiots who stop in yellow boxes and by traffic lights that aren’t timed properly. Also the volume of cars is ridiculous for a comparatively small population.

This ‘lack of planning’ as you call it, is probably the only bit of proper planning that’s happened in the city since Georgian Limerick was built.

    Forwards not backwards.

“Mr daydream that is exactly what you are doing daydreaming” – must have taken you all day.

  10. Mr Daydream says:

Anyway, if you have issues with the councils plans, you should have gone to open consultation evenings like I did.

  11. just me says:

mr daydream it did take me all day just to think of that & did the planner think about the schools that are on this route i dont think so school drop off parking it is not there & people parking in residence spaces another point im making is when u reach the top of sexton street on to parnell st there is 2 lanes 2 to go up parnell st but here is the problem if u are in the left lane its for parnell st & the right hand lane is for parnell st & roches st so this meens 2 lanes cutting in2 1 lane as soon as u reach the parnell st junction which meens the driver on the right hand lane is outside the other driver both going up parnell st i take this route 6 or 7 times every day as for going to consultation evenings it wouldnt make a difference if i was there or not they still do as they please my input into there plans wouldnt make any difference. Yawn Yawn Snooze Zzzzzzzzzzzz…..

  12. Mr Daydream says:

“when u reach the top of sexton street on to Parnell st there is 2 lanes 2 to go up Parnell st but here is the problem if u are in the left lane its for Parnell st & the right hand lane is for Parnell st & roches st so this meens 2 lanes cutting in2 1 lane as soon as u reach the Parnell st junction which meens the driver on the right hand lane is outside the other driver both going up Parnell st”

Well Parnell street is going to be 1 way once the orbital route is finished and there will be 2 or 3 lanes of traffic. And as I said before it all can’t happen at once.

The left lane on Wickam Street is priority for Parnell street, the right is to go onto Roche’s st and to turn onto Wickam street. There is a merging lane on Parnell street at the moment until the orbital route is finished up to Mallow street. Its only chancers that dive up on the outside to push in, and they cause the disruption. Just like the chancers who dive up on the inside at the Parkway roundabout.

You could argue that you should just get rid of the merging lane and just keep it simple, but I think the council were thinking that drivers were well able to do that thinking for themselves as it is lit up like Christmas with signs. Also the merging lane is used for cars coming down Upper Gerald Griffin Street.

As I said before Parnell St will be multiple lane 1 way, and the merging lane will not be there.

As far as for the schools. The council would have replaced any allocated drop off area for the school, but my guess is they never had a drop off and it was just illegal parking. If there were any problem, I’d say the school would have been in contact with the council already, and it will get resolved. There is plenty of vacant land around that area.

The new traffic system makes it easier for buses to get to and from the school, so kids could take the bus to school!! How great is that!! less cars on the roads around the school rush hours!! Or of course they could just walk to school like I used to, and I’m sure most do.

Speed limits could also be cut to 30kph following on from Dublin. I think its a ridiculously slow speed but, I reckon it will come sooner than later. Especially around schools.

    “Yawn Yawn Snooze Zzzzzzzzzzzz”
    Get over yourself

  13. hgd says:

well I went up upper william st again to night and everytime I go up there now it give me ire, I was waiting for the lights to go green to go right and there wasnt a car coming the other way and I was stuck, how the f’c is this going forwards, its def going backwards and in a few months time they are going to block the road coming into Limerick by the old roxboro swimmimg pool, ffs, we wont be able to get into the city from the roxboro road side and its hard to get out by william st, planning my arse, Mr Dreamer you are living up to your title, def a dreamer if you think this is going forward. who ever is planning this is a moron!!!!
