Two Irish men, one of them from Limerick, are recovering hospital in New York after they were shot in a dispute at a bowling alley.

29 year old Gerard Hourigan from Bruff, County Limerick and 29 year old Justin Donaghy from Navan, were both shot following the altercation with a security guard the AMF bowling alley in Queens.

Police say the security guard, a retired prison officer, shot the men during a confrontation after he asked them to leave the alley because they wouldn’t stop smoking.

According to a published report the two Irish men were drunk and had allegedly charged at 54 year old Michael Iavecchio on the street outside the alley. Iavecchio reacted and shot Mr. Hourigan in the upper body and Mr. Donaghy in the stomach.

Both men were taken to a nearby hospital where they remain in a comfortable condition. The incident was captured on CCTV.

Police arrested the security guard, who is licensed to carry a concealed weapon and have charged him with two counts of second-degree assault. The Irish pair have been charged with menacing.

The Limerick leader reports the parents of Mr. Hourigan have flown to the U.S to be by their son’s bedside.
