Thousands of people were treated to a spectacular show in Limerick Saturday night when the National Lottery Skyfest light up the skies over the city.

Limerick’s St. Patrick’s Festival got into full swing as crowds lined up along the quays and at Arthurs Quay Park for the 30 minute spectacle which was broadcast nationally on live T.V.

Over one and a half tonnes of fireworks were let off over the backdrop of the river Shannon and King Johns Castle, which itself was light up with special lighting effects.

Performance group Arcana also performed before and during the fireworks, with the event being choreographed to a background soundtrack assembled by 2FM’s Jenny Greene.

If you were there, tell us what you made of it.

The spectacular show lifted the mood and atmosphere in Limerick. It was with great pride that I enjoyed the fireworks from the vantage point of Sarsfield bridge, and congratulations to everybody who put this entertainment together.

I took rugrats #1 & #2 to the event tonight, and while the fireworks themselves were very good and they enjoyed themselves once it started, I have a couple of gripes. I was in Arthurs Quay Park, which was supposed to be the hub of the evening’s entertainment, however nothing of note happened there until the fireworks except a few unenthusiastic jugglers and stilt walkers. Where were the face painting, fire eaters and street performers?

Also, the viewing areas could have been better thought out. What’s the point having viewing areas as far down as the new bridge if everything was happening at the castle? A lot of the really special fireworks were at low altitudes and people on Harvey’s Quay and O’Callaghan’s strand would have missed it all with buildings in the way. Why weren’t the fireworks let off from somewhere central like Sarsfield bridge?

As usual when the gardaí tried to “manage” the traffic it went to hell. They made a good job of the O’Connell St. – William St. junction but seem to have forgot that they switched off *all* the traffic lights in town, so it took me over 20 minutes to drive the 400 yards from lower Cecil St. to the Jurys Inn roundabout. They should have either had a presence at all junctions or just left the traffic to its own devices.

It’s common though isn’t it for them to leave city traffic light on amber during major city events, usually Munster matches. They seem to think it works anway

why did they turn off the traffic lights, I dont see any logic in this

We all felt scared but really happy when the spectacular fireworks went off. Excitement filled the air. The fireworks were pretty and colourful. Some looked like fireflies and shooting stars. Lots of us were watching them from the vantage point of Sarsfield Bridge. We enjoyed the beautiful and amazing fireworks and we all went to bed happy.
