
A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was shot in the head Monday night.
The incident happened around 9.20pm as the victim, a man in his twenties, was sitting in a car off Cathedral Place, talking with a number of friends.
It’s understood the he was approached by an assailant who fired a number of shots in his direction. He was struck at least once the head before the shooter escaped.
Armed Gardai and ambulance personnel were called to the scene and the victim was rushed to the Regional Hospital, in the same car he was shot, under armed garda escort.
The area of St. Johns Square has been sealed off for technical and forensic examinations.
Arrests
Three people were detained by Gardai as part of the investigation late Monday night.
“In a follow up operation two males and one female all aged in their twenties were arrested. They are currently detained at Henry St. and Roxboro Garda Stations”, a Garda spokesperson said. All three are being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act.
The area of St. Johns Square has been sealed off for technical and forensic examinations. Gardai at Henry Street are investigating.
Investigators are trying to establish a motive for the attack and are appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity St John’s Square Monday evening between 9pm and 10pm to contact them.

The victim of the shooting, 20 year old Daniel Phillips, has been transferred to Cork University Hospital where he has undergone emergency surgery. He remains in a critical condition.
House to house inquiries are continuing in the area of the shooting and Gardai say they are still searching for the weapon used in the attack.
Three people are still in custody and being interviewed by Gardai.
